Lualhati Bautista

Lualhati Bautista is one of the foremost Filipino female novelists in the history of contemporary Philippines Literature. She has been awarded several Palanca Awards in 1980, 1983 and 1984 for her novels like GAPÔ, Dekada ‘70 and Bata, Bata….Pa’no ka Ginawa?. She also became a national fellow for fiction of the University of the Philippines Creative Writing Center in 1986. Bautista also served the vice-president of the Screenwriters Guild of the Philippines, the chair of the Kapisanan ng mga Manunulat ng Nobelang Popular. Other than that, Lualhati Bautista is the only Filipino included in a book on Foremost International Women Writers published in Japan in 1991.

Bautista remains relevant today as she was before. Her novels should be read by future generations of Filipinos—not only to enrich memory but embolden each and everyone’s pursuit to live lives free from the grip of tyranny.

She influenced people as a woman writer with common recurring themes of war. She is one of the writers that exposed injustices and chronicling women activism during the Marcos regime wherein Martial Law was declared. Bautista also successfully illustrated women empowerment in her works and characters. She encouraged the idea that women must have the courage to break out of the rules and roles the society is forcing upon them.

Through her works, she inspired and is continuing to inspire so many Filipino women to confront Philippine women's issues with grit and strength.
