Fe del Mundo

Updated: Mar 12, 2020

Fe del Mundo was a Filipina pediatrician and the founder of the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines. She is most notably known as the first female student (and a Filipina at that!) to attend Harvard Medical School. After graduating from Harvard, she practiced her profession in the Philippines during the Japanese invasion and became known as “The Angel of Santo Tomas” for her work helping children detained at the University of Santo Tomas.

After the war, she founded the Dr. Fe Del Mundo Medical Center and was cited as an "Outstanding Pediatrician and Humanitarian" by the International Pediatric Association in 1977. By the 21st century, she was conferred the "Order of Lakandula," one of the highest civilian orders of the Philippines, by former President Arroyo. She was also conferred the Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart Award by former President Aquino.

As one of the Filipino scientists having the title of "National Scientist of the Philippines", del Mundo was also known for devising an incubator made out of bamboo, designed for use in rural communities without electrical power.

Having greatly contributed to the field of medicine in the Philippines, Fe del Mundo is truly someone to be looked up to.
